Nothing personifies the passage into spring than the Annual St. John’s/USNA Croquet Match. What began in 1982 as a good-hearted challenge between The “Johnnies” and the “Mids” has blossomed into a colorful annual celebration featuring an array of plaid, seersucker, and big hats that rivals The Kentucky Derby. Attendees sit, dressed in Gatsby-Style attire, on the lawn of St. John’s College and watch as the two teams vie for the coveted Annapolis Cup. Even Sports Illustrated says the match has “no parallel in intercollegiate sports.” The “Johnnies” play in different “uniforms” each year, and the “Mids” follow the United States Croquet Association dress code.
